Hyperhidrosis, or excessing sweating, is a condition that is estimated to affect 5% of the US population. It rarely affects the entire body, but often targets the armpits, hands, feet or the face. Hyperhidrosis can be a socially embarrassing condition that is difficult to control with over-the-counter antiperspirant or deodorants. Causes and Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is typically caused by an overstimulation of the sweat glands, causing patients to sweat even when their body does not need to regulate its temperature. Of the many people who suffer from hyperhidrosis, most do not seek treatment due to embarrassment or other reasons. The exact cause of hyperhidrosis can vary, but risk factors include genetics (family history), medications, menopause and certain medical conditions like diabetes, gout or cancer.
Hyperhidrosis comes in two types – primary and secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis is a condition that is not caused by outside factors like medications or other health issues. This type tends to begin in childhood or adolescence. Secondary hyperhidrosis is a side effect of another condition or exposure to certain substances.
The main symptom of hyperhidrosis is excessive, visible sweating in one or more areas unrelated to temperature regulation or exertion. Many people with hyperhidrosis may also experience skin problems due to prolonged wetness, including white, soft skin that peels or has fungal infections.
There are many treatments available for hyperhidrosis. They include prescription antiperspirant, a prescription towelette, neurotoxins (Botox®), Iontophoresis and oral tablets. Hyperhidrosis can be very embarrassing, frustrating and physically uncomfortable, but there is no need to live with the physical and social discomfort. With the right hyperhidrosis treatment, you can control this embarrassing condition and feel comfortable again in social situations.
