Common but temporary problems after TCA peels are swelling and redness; these improve after the tissues heal but redness may persist for more days. Serious but very unlikely complications after the procedure are infection and scarring; Dr. Rueda prescribes antibiotics to prevent infection and uses a very controlled technique to minimize the possibility of scarring from overtreatment. A long term side effect of TCA peels is lightening of skin color and pigment (hypopigmentation); this is usually not a problem for light skin color patients. For this reason, dark skin color patients are not good candidates for TCA peels.
