Spider Veins Symptoms and Diagnosis

Spider veins typically present as dilated blood vessels close to your skin with a blue or red color. In some cases they are associated with leg discomfort and itchiness.

Spider veins are typically diagnosed by physical examination alone. In some cases Dr. Rueda may order an ultrasound to rule out any other more serious conditions.

WHAT CAUSES Spider Veins?

They are small, dilated blood vessels that are close to your skin.  Because of their proximity to the surface, they may look blue or red.  Spider veins are usually asymptomatic but occasionally they may cause leg discomfort and itchiness.

There are several factors that can make you more likely to develop spider veins: teachers, healthcare workers and other professionals that spend most of their time standing are affected more frequently. Family history, use of oral contraceptives and pregnancy are risk factors associated with the development of spider veins.

Spider Veins Treatment Options

If your spider veins are not bothering you, no treatment is needed.  However, if you would prefer them removed, we can inject your veins with a special solution to scar down those vessels.

It may also be worthwhile to check your legs for deeper venous insufficiency as this may lead to recurrent spider veins.

Spider Veins Procedure

Procedures to treat spider veins usually involve injecting a sclerosing solution inside the vein to scar it down and help improve its appearance. This is typically done by a simple injection through the skin like is done in during preventive vaccination.
