Gynecomastia – Men

Dr. Steven Rueda is one of the most sought after surgeons for gynecomastia in Palm Beach. His attention to detail and methodical technique create beautiful and natural results. Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that corrects enlarged breast in men. It can affect up to 60% of men during their lifetime. Gynecomastia surgery is also known as “male breast reduction”. Enlarged breasts are very bothersome to men physically, and can limit the ability to exercise or wear fitted clothing. In some cases, it can also cause emotional disturbance and affect self confidence. Gynecomastia surgery removes the abnormal enlarged breast tissue to restore a fitted and masculine chest contour.

What can gynecomastia surgery correct

Enlarged breasts

Caused by enlargement of breast glands from elevated estrogen. Gynecomastia surgery directly removes the enlarged breasts to reduce their size.

Droopy chest

In men with significant enlargement, the excess gland stretches out the overlying skin. As the skin weakens from stretching, the chest may begin to droop. Gynecomastia surgery corrects droopy appearance by removing the excess skin.

Droopy or deviated nipple

Droopy nipples or deviated nipples are common in severe gynecomastia. Surgery can reduce their size and also position them in a more adequate location.

Gynecomastia procedure

Gynecomastia surgery removes excess skin, breast gland tissue, and repositions the nipples. The extent of surgery and incisions is dependent on the amount of excess skin, and type of breast enlargement. Fatty breast enlargement is easily corrected with liposuction. Glandular enlargement usually needs incisions to directly remove the hardened gland. Dr. Rueda performs three types of gynecomastia surgery: liposuction, mini-incision gynecomastia, or traditional gynecomastia. Their differences are highlighted below:

Liposuction

Puncture made and hidden at the areola border.

Mini-Incision Gynecomastia

Made and hidden around the lower border of the areola.

Traditional Gynecomastia

Made at the lower border of the chest at the inframammary fold.

Liposuction

Mild to moderate gynecomastia (mostly fatty) and good skin quality

Mini-Incision

Mild to moderate gynecomastia (mostly glandular) and good skin quality.

Full Breast Reduction

Severe gynecomastia, droopy chest and nipples, poor skin quality.

RECOVERY AND DOWNTIME

This is an ambulatory procedure, where you get to go home the same day. There is surprisingly lower amount of pain than expected. There is tightness, swelling and bruising for first few days after surgery. Usually a bandage is placed and removed in 48 hours. A chest vest is worn for a total of 2 weeks.

Most patients generally return to work in 1-2 weeks. Exercise is not allowed until 4 weeks after the surgery.
