What can breast revision correct

Inadequate implant size

Patient’s with smaller implant than desired may upgrade to a larger size provided their breast anatomy permits for such a change. The easiest solution is removal and placement of a larger implant in the position the old implant was located. This may require some work to loosen the breast pocket to accept a larger implant (known as a capsulotomy or capsulectomy). For those who have a larger implant than desired the solution is to downsize the implant. In these cases, a breast lift or capsulorraphy may be needed to adjust the tissues to the smaller implant.

Inadequate implant position

An implant that appears too high or too low are common causes of breast revision. This is usually caused by implant migration. A less common cause is improper placement at the time of initial surgery. For breasts that appear to have shifted sideways or appear too low, the implant breast pocket is tightened on the inside of the body (known as capsulorraphy). Implants that sit low in the breast give rise to what is popularly known as “bottoming out”, and can also give rise to “double bubble” appearance. For breasts that appear too high, the space below the implant is opened up allowing the implant to sit lower on the chest (known as capsulotomy).

Ugly appearing scars

Although uncommon, ugly scars are seen in patient’s who had tight skin closures in their original procedure or have a history of poor scarring. Revision procedure include scar removal and closure in a tension free manner. This may be supplemented by injections that prevent scarring to form later, laser procedure, and scar prevention techniques.

Nipple malposition

A low nipple may be seen as aging ensues in patients who had a successful breast augmentation or breast lift. Revision surgery can return the nipple to its original position with ease. On the other hand, a high nipple is a very difficulty problem to solve. It requires reconstructive techniques that Dr. Rueda will discuss with you in person.

Capsular contracture

A common cause of revision cosmetic breast surgery. As the implant lives in the body, a tissue shell forms around it known as the breast implant capsule. If this capsule hardens or tightens, a condition known as capsular contracture arises. It may lead to pain, stiffness, and changes in breast shape. Revision surgery usually involves ruling out a ruptured implant, removal of the implant capsule, and placement of the implant in a different position.
